I’ve read several of Atwood’s books in tha past and enjoyed each and every one, so hopefully I will enjoy this just as much!

Although I’ve read this before (when I but a mere teenager), I recently picked up a copy that has both volumes in one and am keen to reread the adventures of Arthur, Merlin and Co.

Audrey is keen for me to read this novel as she’s a fan of the author’s other work.

I found this a while ago in a library book sale and thought it sounded interesting. I’m unfamiliar with her work so am keen to discover what it’s all about.

I’ve long had an interest in true crime and the Yorkshire Ripper case is one I’m not overly familiar with, hence my interest in reading this particular tome.

I’m a huge Murakami fan, so finding a copy of this book for a mere 50cents in a local op-shop was a particularly wonderful moment!

I hadn’t heard of this YA series until I arrived in Australia and I’ve been meaning to read it ever since. Hence why I’ve checked out all seven books from my local library!

Ten books I’d like to read in 2014

Not being one who keeps an eye on the list of upcoming books, trying to come up with ten I’d like to read throughout the year ahead has been surprisingly difficult. Initially I began browsing the release lists on sites like Amazon, GoodReads and Barnes & Nobel but the sheer volume of romance and dodgy fantasy fiction eventually overwhelmed me into approaching my list a little differently.

Last year, I wrote a post that showcased the BBC’s ‘100 Books you must read before you die list‘. After studying the list it transpired that I only had twenty books to read before I’d read every single one of them, so I decided this year was as good as any to start polishing off those missing twenty books. Rather than just fill my list with these titles, I figured the best option would be to choose three of them to kick-start my literary adventures for 2014:

I then decided to give Meadhbh the option to choose a few books for us to read. After much deliberation, babbling and a seemingly endless series of questions, she decided upon:

And then, given her love of all things literary, Audrey requested that she choose a couple of books to read in 2014:

Following the (most welcome) input from my various people, I was left with only three books for me to decide upon. Obviously, there needed to be at least one Charles de Lint, which left only two. Eventually, after much deliberation, I remembered seeing the new JJ Abrams novel in a bookshop during my trip to Melbourne. Being a fan of his film work I realised that this needed to go on the list and, to prevent any further frustrations, realised I could add not one, but two de Lint books to the list:

Whether or not I read any of these books is something only time will tell, but it is rather wonderful to have the beginnings of a list for me to work through over the next twelve months! :)

Friday Finds (December 06)

A book I’d never heard of until I saw it on sale during my time in Melbourne. I know nothing about this book but will read it because I’m a huge JJ Abrams fan! :)

I saw this book in a branch of WH Smith during my time in Melbourne. I’ve never heard of it before but from the blurb and the brief few pages I read, it’s one I want to read it its entireity.

I found a copy of this classic novel in an op-shop for 50c. I’ve yet to get around to reading it, but one day I will!

One of the few books by Irvine Welsh that I’ve yet to read, and another I found recently in an op-shop.

Another op-shop find that I know little about other than the intruiging premise…!

I’m a big fan of Pessl’s debut “Strange Topics in Calamity Physics”, so I’m eagerly anticipating reading her follow up novel.

Friday Finds (October 4: The Op-Shop Edition)

~ One of my local Op-Shops currently has a ‘Buy One Book Get One Book Free’ offer running, so I paid a total of $4 for the above six books during a visit there this afternoon. Once I get around to reading them, I’ll let you know if they’re any good! :) ~

Friday Finds (September 20)

FRIDAY FINDS showcases the books you ‘found’ and added to your To Be Read (TBR) list. Whether you found them online, or in a bookstore, or in the library — wherever! (they aren’t necessarily books you purchased).

Patrick White is my favourite Australian author and this is one of the few books of his that I have yet to read.

As a voice hearer and supporter of the Hearing Voices Movement, this book is quintessential reading.

I’ve loved Danny Wallace’s non-fiction books for many, many years. In fact, I used to perform my own ‘yes days’ after reading his book ‘The Yes Man’. This is his first novel and one I’m much looking forward to.

I have cherished Iain Banks’ writing for over fifteen years and was greatly saddened by his passing this year. The Quarry, his last novel, is the only book of his that I haven’t read and am much looking forward to doing so.

Aside from being a fan of Atkinson’s work, the premise of this novel intrigues me; in which we keep revisiting the lead character’s life (after life) to see the different directions it could have taken depending on her various choices.

James Kelman has been one of my favourite author’s for many years. I am a huge fan of his novel “Kieron Smith, Boy” and am grealy looking forward to his latest novel.

Friday Finds (August 30)

FRIDAY FINDS showcases the books you ‘found’ and added to your To Be Read (TBR) list. Whether you found them online, or in a bookstore, or in the library — wherever! (they aren’t necessarily books you purchased).

This book, along with the other book on the subject of Bob Dylan, were loaned to me by a participant in my Creative Therapy group. These books assisted him on his recovery journey and hoped to pass on the favour to me. I shall keep you informed once I’ve read them.

I found these books by Peter May at a library sale a couple of months ago. They are crime fiction based on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. No prizes for knowing why I’d like to read these! :p

Yes, I am still an insomniac. I’m hoping that this book may provide me with insight (and perhaps a few tips) on getting a better night’s sleep!

This book was recommended to me by my support worker at Gateway. Apparently it is a hugely inspirational story. I shall let you know if it affects me once I’ve gotten around to reading it.

Audrey found this in an op-shop today and we struck a bargain so that I’d buy it for her. She (and I) are huge fans of DeLillo’s work and this is one we’ve never read before.

A classic study that I’ve been meaning to read for quite some time…rendered easier after finding a dog-eared copy in a local charity shop! :)

This book is used regularly in the Hearing Voices Support Group I attend and is oft-cited by members of the Hearing Voices Movements as being a rich and wonderful resource for people on their recovery journey.

Having already polished off ‘The Happiness Trap’ and ‘The Reality Slap’, it only stands to reason that I want to read Russ Harris’ ‘The Confidence Gap’ as I continue my journey with ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy)
