All that I am, all that I ever was…

I am more than my mental health. I am more than my homelessness. I am more than any one aspect of me. I am Addy. And this is…

Weekly Photo Challenge: Green

This week’s photo challenge theme is Green.

For some of you, in the northern hemisphere, you may not be seeing green for a while. Let’s celebrate all things green! Share (many) pictures in a gallery which mean GREEN to you!

As I live in the southern hemisphere, green is everywhere I look, and will be for several months. Which isn’t a bad thing considering for the last several months this colour has been noticeably absent from my life and surroundings.

“The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the way. Some see nature all ridicule and deformity… and some scarce see nature at all. But to the eyes of the man of imagination, nature is imagination itself.”
~ William Blake ~

Weekly Photo Challenge: Geometry

This week’s photo challenge is geometry.

For a long time I’ve had a habit of taking one ‘snapshot’ of a major landmark followed by several dozen abstracts of the same subject. I do this not because I want to render the famous building unrecognisable, but because I love the shapes and rhythms of our world.

I will leave it to you to identify what famous Australian landmark this is, there’s no fun in just telling you :)

“Everything one invents is true, you may be perfectly sure of that. Poetry is as precise as geometry.”
~  Gustave Flaubert ~

Weekly Photo Challenge: Foreign

This week’s photo challenge is foreign.

In the UK, the most dangerous animals you’re likely to encounter are an Adder, a cranky badger or a midgie, all of which are unlikely to kill you (unless it’s a really cranky badger!) Whereas in Australia, you’re risking life and death whenever you leave your house! Swooping magpies, Tiger snakes, red back spiders, jellyfish, hungry wombats, crocodiles, drop bears…the list is varied, vicious and endless.

So even though I now call Australia home, it’s a completely foreign land to where I was born and raised. Something I continue to remind myself of so I don’t miss the beauty that is all around me (and to increase my chances of staying alive!)

“The whole object of travel is not to set foot on foreign land; it is at last to set foot on one’s own country as a foreign land.”
~ G. K. Chesterton ~

Weekly Photo Challenge: Silhouette

The moment I saw this week’s photo challenge was silhouette, I thought of this wee image taken many years ago whilst on a trip to the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. On a late afternoon walk across the island of Beneray I shot this silhouette of a ruined blackhouse against the beautiful Hebridean sky and it’s been one of my favourite photographs ever since.

“Life is episode after episode of peaks and troughs. Despite politicians there are sunsets. Despite history there is tomorrow. Despite death there is uncertainty. Despite wage-slavery there is art. Despite loss there is sleep and time, both of which you can count on to refresh and renew you as you decay.”

Weekly Photo Challenge: Big

This week’s photo challenge is big and throughout my life, few places have made me feel as small as the Northern Territory of Australia.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Mine

This week’s photo challenge is mine. Is there a place, object, or view that’s entirely yours, or you’re a bit selfish or possessive about? Is it a feeling you feel when you look at the photo, or perhaps an unwillingness to share? For me, there is only one thing that comes to mind.

A view to soothe my soul (Glenfinnan, February 2008) © Addy

Glenfinnan is my solace in times of pain. When I ran away from home in 1997, fueled by my love of the television series Highlander, this is where I was headed. Following Rachel’s suicide I retreated here to collect my thoughts and battle the demon’s of suicidal ideation. Following breakdowns and abuse in Australia, Glenfinnan was my destination for I knew it was the best cure for my pain.

Glenfinnan is my heaven in times of joy. A moonlit skinny dip in the waters of Loch Sheil one balmy autumnal night. A cheeky sexual encounter in the woods overlooking the loch. An ill-advised hike that saw me lose my barings and become lost in the wilderness. The greatest caramel slice I’ve ever eaten, courtesy of the wonderful staff at the National Trust Visitor Center.

Glenfinnan, more than any other place in the world, defines me.
