All that I am, all that I ever was…

I am more than my mental health. I am more than my homelessness. I am more than any one aspect of me. I am Addy. And this is…

Daily Prompt: Morton’s Fork

Today’s WordPress Daily Prompt is:

If you had to choose between being able to write a blog (but not read others’) and being able to read others’ blogs (but not write your own), which would you pick? Why?

To blog or not to blog

Given I’ve been thinking recently of ending the blog, this isn’t a difficult choice at all; I would read other blogs and not write my own.

Being someone who often questions why he continues to write a blog, I’d much rather throw myself into the worlds of others than continue sharing my own. This way, I could keep up to date with news, current affairs, opinions, the occasional naughty photograph and the lives of others without having to worry about creating interesting post ideas, the continual embarrassment of sharing my existence so publicly and whether or not anyone is enjoying what I’ve written.

Granted, for a long time this blog has been my only therapy. It has been there when no-one else was, helped me through difficult and painful experiences and provided solace when all felt lost. But if I didn’t write this blog I could still achieve this release through journals without having to bother anyone with my meandering, soul-searching ramblings.

There is also Twitter, which although far from a safe place, could offer the chance to micro-blog my pain and continue my quest to raise awareness of the things society prefers not to talk about.

So all up, this choice is simple, but the choice over whether I should end the blog in reality is a lot more complicated.

Until I’ve decided, I’ll just continue with the best of both worlds.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Foreign

This week’s photo challenge is foreign.

In the UK, the most dangerous animals you’re likely to encounter are an Adder, a cranky badger or a midgie, all of which are unlikely to kill you (unless it’s a really cranky badger!) Whereas in Australia, you’re risking life and death whenever you leave your house! Swooping magpies, Tiger snakes, red back spiders, jellyfish, hungry wombats, crocodiles, drop bears…the list is varied, vicious and endless.

So even though I now call Australia home, it’s a completely foreign land to where I was born and raised. Something I continue to remind myself of so I don’t miss the beauty that is all around me (and to increase my chances of staying alive!)

“The whole object of travel is not to set foot on foreign land; it is at last to set foot on one’s own country as a foreign land.”
~ G. K. Chesterton ~

Weekly Photo Challenge: Big

This week’s photo challenge is big and throughout my life, few places have made me feel as small as the Northern Territory of Australia.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Mine

This week’s photo challenge is mine. Is there a place, object, or view that’s entirely yours, or you’re a bit selfish or possessive about? Is it a feeling you feel when you look at the photo, or perhaps an unwillingness to share? For me, there is only one thing that comes to mind.

A view to soothe my soul (Glenfinnan, February 2008) © Addy

Glenfinnan is my solace in times of pain. When I ran away from home in 1997, fueled by my love of the television series Highlander, this is where I was headed. Following Rachel’s suicide I retreated here to collect my thoughts and battle the demon’s of suicidal ideation. Following breakdowns and abuse in Australia, Glenfinnan was my destination for I knew it was the best cure for my pain.

Glenfinnan is my heaven in times of joy. A moonlit skinny dip in the waters of Loch Sheil one balmy autumnal night. A cheeky sexual encounter in the woods overlooking the loch. An ill-advised hike that saw me lose my barings and become lost in the wilderness. The greatest caramel slice I’ve ever eaten, courtesy of the wonderful staff at the National Trust Visitor Center.

Glenfinnan, more than any other place in the world, defines me.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Solitary

This week’s photo challenge is ‘solitary‘. As I mentioned yesterday my first choice of photograph for this topic is unusable as I don’t have permission from the model. Therefore I present instead a frog, lost in a world of isolated contemplation, yearning for company. Or munchies.

“The whole conviction of my life now rests upon the belief that loneliness, far from being a rare and curious phenomenon, peculiar to myself and to a few other solitary men, is the central and inevitable fact of human existence”
~ Thomas Wolfe ~
