The Black House
by Peter May

Blackhouse

Of all the books I’ve read in recent times, this has been one of the best. On the face of it, it’s just another stereotypical crime novel (moments of suspense, the odd twist and a gruesome autopsy scene) but the Outer Hebridean setting and complex, realistic (loveable) characters elevate it above your bog-standard crime thriller. As such, I can whole heartedly recommend it not just to fans of this genre of storytelling, but for anyone who loves a fantastic piece of fiction.

So, what’s everyone else reading at the moment? Go on, give us a tease…

  1. Hmm… I might give it a try then. Crime is not usually my cup of tea (and I have tried over and over), but working as a librarian I feel like I should have read at least a couple good crime novels to have something to recommend.
I tried one in Dan Brown-style by the Norwegian author Tom Egeland a little while ago, but all the facts were wrong when it came to the use of symbols, which kept bugging me until I gave up on it.
Anyway, here is my teaser for this week. :) Have a nice Tuesday!

    • I have a love-hate relationship with crime fiction which usually boils down to how I feel about the author. I can’t tolerate James Patterson or Dan Brown, and the cavalcade of authors like them, but occasionally I discover a Peter May, Cody Macfadyen or Richard Montanari, who apply a more literary approach to the genre with beautiful descriptions and engaging characters in place of shock twists and cliche.

If you choose to read The Black House, I do hope you enjoy it. Have a great Tuesday! :)

  3. Wow, Outer Hebrides? Where? Have you read ‘A School in South Uist’? It’s no thriller, though, but I love Outer Hebrides settings!

    • The novel is set predominantly on the Isle of Lewis, and contains some stunning descriptive passages concerning the landscape, history and lifestyle of the island. As such the book is definitely worth reading if you have an interest in the islands, which is what drew me to the novel in the first place. Having visited the Hebrides many times, I too love books set in this corner of the world. In fact, one of my favourite novels is based on Lewis; The Stornoway Way by Kevin Macneil, which is a wonderful piece of writing.

I haven’t read ‘A School in South Uist’ but will keep my eye out for it. Happy Tuesday! :)

  7. I adored this trilogy of books, like you I started reading and quickly realised it was far more than a standard crime novel. Love the teaser you chose too. Here is mine http://cleopatralovesbooks.wordpress.com/2014/03/11/teaser-tuesday-march-11/
