The fourth day of the 30 Days of Mental Illness Awareness challenge sees the toughest prompt yet:

What are the pros and cons of having a mental illness?

Pros and Cons of Mental Illness

I’m considering revisiting this list from time to time to see if things change as I progress along my road to recovery.
Until then, I’m curiuos to know what you think the pros and cons of having a mental illness are?

  1. I think this is a good list that covers it. But another con is that people are sometimes oversensitive. They feel like they’re constantly being judged, even when they’re not.
And another one is feeling bad about one’s physical appearance.

  3. Some of these comments seem inaccurate. I’ve read about bipolar disorder and people say mania isn’t always a good thing it could cause them to feel irritable. Also there are mental illnesses where a person
feels numb such as schizophrenia or schizoid personality disorder

    • Thanks for your comment.

This list was written from my own personal experiences of bipolar, PTSD and social anxiety; as such, the comments are accurate to me. Everyone’s experience of mental illness is different, and thus their list of pros/cons would be different to mine. Some people may feel irritable whilst in a manic episode of bipolar, but this is not my personal experience of it, quite the opposite.

I agree that there are mental illnesses where a person feels numb. Although I don’t have any direct experience of schizophrenia or schizoid personality disorder, I have had experiences of numbness as a result of the illnesses I do suffer from, and it’s a horrible state to be in.
