101 Things that make me happy (Part 01)

On the 24 May 2012 I wrote a blog post that looked at twenty-five things that make me happy. Following last week’s epiphany, I’ve decided to challenge myself to come up with 101 things that make me happy; for only by knowing what makes us happy can we hope to find happiness in the future.

For those who have forgotten/missed them (and to prevent any pesky repetitions) here are the original twenty-five things:

1. Charles de Lint
2. Jacket Potatoes (with butter, cheese, broccoli and cauliflower)
3. The Legend of Zelda
4. Wombats
5. Articles
6. Blogging
7. Glenfinnan
8. The female posterior
9. That moment you realize the book you’re holding is something special
10. The Virgin (Gustav Klimt)
11. Photography
12. The fact that so many people have become obsessed with 50 Shades of Grey
13. Sleepy Lizards
14. James Kelman
15. Flannel Pyjamas
16. Flannel Pyjamas (being worn by a woman)
17. Shaun Micallef
18. Hugs
19. Kisses
20. Sex
21. Going Down Under
22. The Doctor Who Theme
23. To Write Love On Her Arms
24. Skittles
25. Comments

And now, the list continues…

26. Lime; it’s such a shame that it will forever live in Lemon’s shadow!
27. Spelling mistakes; it always makes me smile when I’m reminded that editors are human too.
28. Roald Dahl; how I missed him from my initial twenty-five will forever confuse me! :p
29. The male posterior; because some of them make me realize I’m not so ugly after all! :)
30. Coconut rice; so much more exciting than normal rice. Unless you’re allergic to coconut, that is!
31. Frasier; one of the greatest and most consistent sitcoms ever made. Easily kicks Seinfeld’s ass!
32. Serena Ryder; there’s a reason she’s my favourite songsmith of all time!
33. Cycling; why drive when you can ride a bike? I just don’t understand why more people don’t.
34. Jenna Louise Coleman; the fact she reminds me of Sammi is just a bonus! :p
35. Masturbation; what? If this doesn’t make you happy, you’re doing it wrong! I prescribe practice! :p

Note: The placement of items (34) and (35) is purely coincidental!

(27) Spelling mistakes; it always makes me smile when I’m reminded that editors are human too.

Tomorrow: Writing, Callipos, Apostrophe Nazis and more…

    • Thanks for your comment :)

I was secretly hoping to inspire people to write their own ‘things that make me happy’ list, no matter how bad one feels it can really help us focus on the postive aspects in our lives.

      Hope you’re having a great weekend! :)

  2. They make coconut rice?-! And I agree about the lime.
I’ve been visiting mental health specific blogs; I’ve got manic depression and OCD. My daughter is bi-polar, and her onset sounds horribly similar to yours. She also self- harms, and suicide runs in the family. I am so sorry you have to have this in your life too. I know how difficult it can be, but I’m also glad to have found a post that involves the positives in life. I believe it’s important to add as many positive posts as we can – but still tell our story without sugar coating it.

    • Coconut rice is awesome! :D You can get it in restaurants and some supermarkets, but I tend to make my own these days (by cooking the rice in coconut milk with a little sprinkle of desicated coconut) which often turns out nicer than the restaurant’s offering! :p

When I began writing the blog I made a committment to myself to never sugarcoat what I was feeling or the events that had happened to me. I guess I hope that by being honest about my experiences I’ll help others realise they’re not alone and (even in a small way) help shatter the stigma of mental illness.

I completley agree with the positive posts; there’s a lot more to come this week! :)

  4. Laughed at 8 and I’m so with you on 22; bow ties are so cool! And 28, my favourite writer. If I could write a short story anywhere near as cool as Roald’s in his ‘Best of Roald Dahl’ tales, I’d be so chuffed.

    • My copy of ‘Best of Roald Dahl’ has been fixed with so much cellotape and TLC that I’m amazed it hasn’t completely disintegrated! I would be more than chuffed to be able to write something that was even remotely close to the beauty of some of those stories!

As for (22), it’s always nice to meet a fellow Whovian. I’m particularly enjoying the new version of the theme (on the most recent episodes) with it’s flashes back to the various themes and Doctors of old. Bow ties are indeed cool – but personally, I much prefer the Fez! ;)
